My aim in setting up this blog is in exploring flats (zinnfiguren) as an art form. Once thought of as playthings, flats have evolved into very artistic pieces, created for and treasured by collectors. I prefer to explore flats in a contextual setting by putting them into shadow-box dioramas of artistic merit which can be reasonably contained within a manageable space. The chronology of this web blog will hopefully blaze a definite trail in this direction.

Progress on the Mammoth scene
The scene would be one of a herd of mammals entering a canyon to be trapped and killed by Cro-Magnon hunters. I pasted some cardboard to serve as scene cutouts. Some of these figures are already positioned on the cutouts. Over these, I pasted some rock surface castings made from resin, added more plaster and rocks, and started to paint the scene. I lightened the sky and will probably repaint the rest of the scene.
Some progress on the Palm Sunday Scene
I finally made some progress on this scene. I painted the background, then decided that I needed stronger colours.
Did some reading on the theme. Jesus entered Jerusalem through the Golden Gate, east of Jerusalem. Current pictures on the internet show a double gated structure (rebuilt in the 6th century AD, so we can only guess as to how the original must have appeared.

Stamped metal pieces
If one looks beyond the obvious sources of zinnfiguren, there are many stamped metal pieces which could be collected as well. For example, my sister gave me these Siamese elephants which are used for cushions and embroidery.

Background and case for Palm Sunday Set
This is the proposed background and case for the above scene, about 2 feet x 1 and half feet. So it is fairly large to accomodate about 30 -40 pieces. The base is sloping as I want to emphasize the perspective of this piece.

Updating the Palm Sunday set
Although I am not enamoured of the sculpting on this set, the painting can bring the figures to life. I have a scene planned and these figures will fit into that nicely.
Large set, featuring Jesus on the donkey.
This last pic shows the completed figures, including the Romans, Metal on helmets, chainmail, pilum was simulated with paint, not metallics. Still a long way to go.
New sets from Wilken
I haven't posted for a while on this blog, but the number of visitors have not diminished. So obviously, you all like what it is that I am doing here.
I recently obtained several sets from Alexander Wilken.
